Sgwarnog: In the Field

Admiral

It's surprised me how few butterflies I've come across in St George's Fields, no more than three or four all year to date despite a good variety of vegetation, at least some of which is being left unmown at the moment. Perhaps the surrounding tall buildings act as a barrier, but it is only a few yards away from the broader open space of Woodhouse Moor, so you's think there would be some movement between the two.

So it was nice to see a Red Admiral there today, but just the one and nothing else. It was reported that quite a lot of Red Admirals arrived from the continent over the weekend, so there are more about at the moment.
