Waxwings

For such beautiful birds, waxwings have pretty naff taste in perches. When these northern migrants happen to pass by the UK, you tend to find them in supermarket car parks and embankments.

These were part of a flock of more than 100 who had pitched up in between the M1, A41 and the railway tracks in Hendon today. They were after the berries on three small trees guarded fiercely by a lone mistle thrush. Greedy twat.

Despite the sound of the passing traffic, you could still hear these little birds purring. Their call is almost as lovely as their plumage.
