Northern Exposure

Midsummer

The colour of the water in Scapa Flow was a breathtaking jade green this afternoon. I didn’t have time to stop and get a close up shot so you get a big view instead, gives a suggestion of the colour but doesn’t really do it justice.

100 years ago today the Flow would have been a very different sight as the German High Seas Fleet was scuttled. There’s a lot of activity in the islands at the moment commemorating the event. This programme on Radio Scotland tells the story really well, with some amazing first hand accounts by a group of school kids who witnessed the scuttling whilst out on a school trip around Scapa Flow https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m0005zyt
