Visit to Norman Cross and Peterborough
I travelled to Peterborough today for a great talk and walk with historian Paul Chamberlain around the remains of the napoleonic prison camp at nearby Norman Cross. Little is left but there is the agents house - he was effectively the governor, some of the barns and part of the wall.
This photo is of one of the bone models made by the French prisoners held in Peterborough museum, its of a spinning Jenny as the inmates knew this would be popular and sell. The talk was really interesting. It was a hard life but possibly better than the life of the men on board ship. There were some successful escapes including on French sailor who escaped four times after being recaptured on different privateers.
