Coffin route

We parked at Grasmere, then walked along the coffin route to Rydal. Then we walked back to Grasmere on the other side of Rydal Water beside the lake. The most delightful, varied walk that took just over 3 hours.

Bright, hot sunshine today!!!

The coffin route was used to take those people who had died in Rydal along to the church in Grasmere for burial. Along the route there are stones where the coffin could be laid for a short while so that the coffin bearers got a breather.

In the extra photo you can see Chloe enjoying a swim in Rydal Water...I should have joined her!
