Day 179/19. 'Embracing Peace'
Unveiled recently in front of HMS Victory at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard as part of the city’s D-Day commemorations, the 25 foot (8 metre) statue 'Embracing Peace', also known as 'Unconditional Surrender' has previously been installed in Caen, Northern France and will be in Portsmouth for 1 year.
The original statue depicts an embrace in Times Square, New York, at the end of the WWII conflict, between a returning serviceman and a local girl. It was created by sculptor, Seward Johnson, based on a photograph which appeared in Life magazine celebrating VJ Day (Victory over Japan) and the end of the Second World War.
We loved it. Great stuff.
