In short, John Harrison in the 18th century made a super-accurate chronometer from wood that allowed ships to calculate their longitude with unparalleled precision. He should have been awarded the money that had been put up by the government for just such an achievement. Instead he had to battle for decades to eventually get a fraction of the promised amount.
