Breakup
It's a quiet Sunday morning. Got my coffee.
Ship Creek runs right through north Anchorage near the railroad depot. In the summer, when the salmon are running, fishermen and fisher-women line the muddy banks.
Now, the creek is open and flowing. This is not true for a large portion of the state. Many rivers are still frozen over.
This time of year is called Breakup in Alaska. As the season warms, the river ice will begin to melt and break up and the rivers start to flow.
Breakup indicates the end of Winter and the onset of Spring.
If you care to wager a bet on the exact time of the breakup of the Nanana River near Fairbanks, you can do so HERE.
