Trivial Pursuit
I much prefer Boxing Day to Christmas Day itself. There's less pressure to have fun, less of that feeling that everyone, everywhere is living more fully than you are, enjoying themselves more.
Everything's up in the air on Christmas, but on Boxing Day the madness settles and all that warm, squishy joy has soaked into the sofas and the pine needles and the leftover wrapping paper in the corner. It's a quieter, deeper kind of happiness. And I love it.
This evening my mother's family came over to play Trivial Pursuit with us. I felt absent from it, but not in a bad way. I couldn't stop focusing on the twitching of someone's hands, the tugging at a person's mouth before they smile, the rustle of After Eights' paper when I rubbed it between my fingers. I suppose that's why the video turned out the way it did. The evening felt made of small moments...
