Remember me when this you see.....
We braved the elements today to visit the PHARAOH: King of Egypt exhibit at the Kelvingrove Museum. Not quite as extensive as I expected, but interesting none the less. Was quite captivated by this scarab made of steatite (soapstone) - it was approximately 2.5 inches by 1.5 inches - the detail in the miniature carving is amazing. I can't imagine what it must have been like to carve something that intricate without the tools, light and magnification needed by today's craftsmen/women.
This example of a commemorative scarab, often given to officials as gifts, records the killing of 102 lions by Pharaoh Amenhotep III. These scarabs also recorded events such as bull hunts and the arrival of foreign princesses.
