Stepping Stones
In the middle of nowhere, on our way to Hexham, we stopped for a closer look at an ornate bridge, which had such a steep arch that drivers were advised to sound their horn before crossing. We then discovered that there were stepping stones nearby and, being loath to miss out, hot-footed along the field as directed by a helpful fisherman, to see what we could see.
These may not appear particularly impressive but warning notices suggest that it is not uncommon for the river to rise over the tops, rendering them impassable.
Once at our residence for the week we could work out just where we had been - just south of Wallington, on the River Wansbeck.
