Walk 2/50 - Portland: LLoyd District and Sullivan's Gulch - 1.0 mi
I began at Holladay Park named for Ben Holladay who made his fortune in California organizing the largest stagecoach business. He sold that business to none other than Wells Fargo for $1.5 million in 1866. He got to Portland in 1870, started a rail line but he was a big spender and by 1876 he has lost the rail line. It is also said he was a bit of a con man.
The park has been a Portland city park since 1870 when Ben platted the area and Sullivan's Gulch is a neighborhood of classic Portland architecture.
"Three cast-bronze sculptures by artist Tad Savinar were added to the park as a percent-for-art project in 2000. Entitled Constellation, the project illustrates the connection between the personal front yard garden and the civic park garden through three distinct elements: a vase of cut flowers, an abstract molecule containing elements of a good neighborhood, and the figure of a home gardener, shears in hand."
