Had a marvellous day out in Margate with my pal J. We both enjoy a relaxed mix of contemporary art, real ale, bargains and exploring.

His train to Margate called in at Chatham, where I intercepted it. First we stopped off at Margate station toilets (extra1) [explaining the joke]

Then we wandered along the promenade having acknowledged the brutality of the Cold War era tower block (extra2).

The day was hot and sunny and the yellow sandy beach was tempting, but we felt a duty to first visit the Tate Contemporary for its current exhibition of seaside photographs. That was fun, but larger than anticipated, so a relaxing sit-down was called for. We wandered along the breakwater towards its end, where research told us a good pub awaited. In fact the recommended pub had more than enough brouhaha and so we retraced our steps a short way to a far nicer, smaller, quieter pub where we could sit in the sunshine enjoying beers and the complete lack of activity in the harbour.

From this vantage point we could see clearly how the brutal block of flats dominates the waterfront.(extra3)

Clouds and hunger happened more-or-less simultaneously so we strolled back into town for a bit of exploring, traditional seaside fish & chips and another pub.

Yes. Will visit Margate again. Lots more to see and do.
