Waterston House - and garden
Today I went to Waterston House for the opening of the latest exhibition, "Kyst" ("coast" in Danish), and a talk by the artist, Ben Woodhams, who was very engaging and refreshingly modest! He spent every Friday in 2018 walking a section of the coast of Bornholm, the island where he lives in Denmark. He sketched and painted as he went and recorded the changes in natural and human activities over the course of the year. All his work was completed in the field with no retouching afterwards. His greatest challenge was the weather, unsurprisingly! He had problems with watercolour paint freezing before it got to the paper in winter, as well as drying instantly in the summer. The exhibition contains one picture for each of the days, i.e. 52 paintings, plus his whole output for one of the days as a sample. There is a very beatiful book of the project also entitled "Kyst". Here's a link to the exhibition on the SOC website.
The garden at Waterston House was looking lovely with a number of wildflower areas, as well as some more cultivated beds. There were still swallows nesting under the eaves of the building, their progress being monitored by a webcam.
