Fishing

Home from the Faroe Islands and back to warmer, humid days. We are having salmon for supper and l will think of the islands as fish is their prime income, mostly salmon although cod, haddock whiting and makerel are also caught and exported in huge numbers. It is such an enormous business for them that the figures are that they produce 4 million meals of fish a day - pretty good going for a population of 53,000.
Large salmon rings can be seen dotted around the islands, these ones are just outside Torshavn.
Whilst in the islands we ate lots of beautiful, fresh seafood including langoustines and queen scallops. Not for sale ever but definitely on the Faroese home menu is whale, the Faroese herd and kill a quota of 800 pilot whale a year although as was explained to me you never know how big a pod will be and once herded into the bay and its bigger its too late (3 years ago it was 1000). International condemnation has not dented their enthusiasm for this animal, "its sad that people don't visit beause of this but we will continue to catch and eat whale" l was told. No money passes hands, amounts of the animal are alloted on the basis of those taking part in the hunt.
I will remember the Faroe islands for their savage, wild beauty and bird life and in the meantime it's back to listening to the shipping forecast - l wonder where Lundy is.
