MORTUARY CHAPEL
Today my friend and I visited the mortuary chapel down the road from us. I wish I could post all the shots I took today. The work that went into this place is amazing. Here is some info about the place.
The Mortuary Chapel is the central feature of Arbroath's Western Cemetery, laid out in 1867. The Chapel itself was built in 1875, by Patrick Allan Fraser of Hospitalfield. It was dedicated to the memory of John Fraser of Hospitalfield, his wife Elizabeth Parrot and daughter (wife of Patrick Allan Fraser). The Chapel was available for services of any denomination and was used extensively soon after its erection. However, today it is no longer in use.
Description (exterior)
The chapel was built from high quality ashlar red sandstone and is a Gothic fantasy, more resembling a Victorian mansion than a chapel and former place of worship. There is a square tower in each corner, two of which have deeply corbelled sandstone balconies. There are attached round stair turrets with stone slab slated spires. Most of the windows are rectangular, although there are numerous round-arched doorways, openings and arcading. The main entrance, in the south elevation, is a wide, shallow-arched doorway with elaborate mouldings and carvings. There is a niche on the south-west corner, which has a statue within. There are two sundials on the chapel, located on the north-west tower.
Description (interior)
The interior has been closed and sealed, with all entrances secured and protected. The building is wind and water tight and well maintained.
