a lifetime burning

Guinevere had green eyes

"Guinnevere had green eyes
Like yours, mi'lady like yours
When she'd walk down
Through the garden
In the morning after it rained
Peacocks wandered aimlessly
Underneath an orange tree
Why can't she see me?

Guinnevere
Drew pentagrams
Like yours, mi'lady like yours
Late at night
When she thought
That no one was watching at all
She shall be free
As she turns her gaze
Down the slope
To the harbor where I lay
Anchored for a day

Guinnevere
Had golden hair
Like yours, mi'lady like yours
Streaming out when we'd ride
Through the warm wind down by the bay
Yesterday
Seagulls circle endlessly
I sing in silent harmony
We shall be free"

Crosby Stills Nash ~ Guinevere

In this case the green eye is what is left of one of those wonderful blousy red poppies once the petals have fallen.

I've given you a link to a beautiful live version by Crosby and Nash from 1991, I think its probably my favourite live version of the song - the pacing and dynamics are delightful.  Both the singers are in good voice and Crosby is clearly reasonably sober and free of drugs at this point.  Two part harmonies and a single guitar - sometimes that really is everything that you need.

Bizarrely CSN were possibly the first group to sound more ike a firm of accountants or lawyers than the hippy singer song writers they were. CSN 's first eponymous album still gets a regular airing in this house, as those wonderful three part harmonies (where Steve Stills is involved) continue to delight.
