Quiz night
This is Louie. Not a good picture, but one that sums him up to a tee. I arrive at The Boot while he is finishing a particularly ambitious programme that includes “Nessun Dorma”. Then he spots me getting a drink from the Bear, winks, and launches into “I can’t help falling in love with you”. He is happy to pose for me afterwards, and although I take quite a few pictures, he transforms into an imp every time. He is delighted with the result.
The Lawyers are back and also present the Quizzical Stares, the Squirrels, Old Farts, Dexters and the Pussies. A is again alone at the biggest table connected to a myriad of electronic devices, neatly sprawled over the table, seemingly unaware of the quiz teams having to perch around the bar for lack of space.
Today we are joined by Nick, a character that looks like the love child of Greg Wallace and Alan Partridge. He also out-Miles Miles in Milesness, but only in the worst possible way. K is in good form; the Lawyers spur his competitive spirit, and he comes up with some genius answers. R aces the “Unusual Band Names” round and I also provide a solid performance. Nick, however, offers nothing but lengthy explanations after we’ve provided the right answers and manages to make us change Campari for Cinzano and Follicular Stimulation for Female Sex, putting us in second place, one point behind the lawyers…
We stagger towards the”loser spoons” to meet S, whose team has won their pool matches. He is happy and tells me how his team mates have been teasing him all night about “punching way above his weight “ with me… He is a sweetie….
