Skyline Drive
Just outside the town of Cañon City is Skyline Drive, an aptly named road built by prisoners from the first territorial prison in Colorado, which sits at the westside of town. The county containing the city has seven prisons and the one in town has been in existence since 1871. The warden decided that the city needed a scenic overlook on the adjacent hogback, so he sent prisoners up on the ridge in 1905 to sculpt a three-mile, single-lane road which is still in use today (for those brave enough traverse it). The road is on the right in this shot, and far below on the left is U.S. Hwy 50.
