After midnight

...after we had toasted the new year and everyone had kissed everyone else, it seemed, and wished them a happy new year, this pianist played a bluesy version of 'Hit the road, Jack'. We didn't hit the road, not yet, and more bubbly and more music and singing followed. We went with friends and joined fifty or so others, many of them musicians, to a réveillon organised by another friend. We all took food to share, we ate, we drank, the musicians played, some we'd heard before and others we hadn't, like a Cajun band who shared our table when they weren't playing. It was a wonderful way to start the new year. And it will be a quiet day for us today, I think!
