Black Bay Beach (Svartviks strand)
I'm not sure where the name comes from because the sand is whitish and the sea is far from black.
Our first thought had been to park here and walk along the coast but we met an ex-colleague and his wife who have a cottage just back from the beach so he invited us in and showed us his ongoing renovation. It was a good thing we spent time chatting because our coast walk turned out to be difficult because a few other cottages are so close to the sea they block access. In the end we ate our picnic here and then headed back to town to do some shopping.
There are very few naturally sandy beaches in Sweden because a combination of the non-tidal Baltic and the geology, mitigate against it, but in a few places the prevailing waves drive sand up onto the land. Grass and vegetation eventually take over, as you can see happening here, but the land rise means new beach appears continually. When we arrived here, 30 years ago, the sea was about 30 cm (1 foot) deeper so the shoreline then was about where the lifebuoy is hanging.
I think we'll be back with the kayaks as it's a lovely place to start or finish a paddle.
