Marjorie's ramblings

By walkingMarj

Where were you when our new PM was announced?

I was in London, but nowhere near Parliament at the time. Julie and I met up with Anna in  Granary Square. We wanted to see the Posy Simmonds exhibition at The House of Illustration, but the exhibition was closed "for technical reasons."

Instead we saw the Quentin Blake permanent exhibition and a temporary exhibition of the work of Marie Neurath, a groundbreaking graphic designer who illustrated books on science for children. How had we never heard of her, we wondered?

We had coffee in Waitrose and then went back outside into the baking heat. Watching the children in the fountains was a delight. I took lots of photos and chose this one because these two boys have not gone into the water yet. One is encouraging the other.

There was much squealing and excitement.

I tried to listen to the news on my 'phone at noon, but there were introductory speeches about how well the election had been run and I had to give up.

I think it is shocking that the Tory party should appoint someone who is known to be a liar and a loose canon as our prime minister. What is going on?

My train journey home was dreadful. I was over 3 hours late arriving into Newcastle. The electricity lines north or Grantham were damaged. Our train arrived in Grantham and then backed to Peterborough. Here we changed trains and I did find a seat. I won't go into the whole shambolic awfulness of it, but I was amazed that we did not have people collapsing in the heat.

I was full of admiration for mothers who kept their children occupied and happy. Then there was the usual Dunkirk spirit and people helped each other out. After another change of train, I was standing for a while between carriages in the baking heat, then moved into a first class carriage to stand where it was a little cooler. A young woman gave me her seat 10 mins before her stop and I sat the rest of the way. The people at my table were lovely and we had a good chat. One man battled his way to the buffet car and brought flapjacks for us all.

On an earlier train I sat next to an art specialist at an antique firm and he showed me lots of photos of the pictures he has discovered. He also knew about the Henry VII bed.

I understand this is a special blip day for me, so I'm sorry to be posting so late. I'm pleased to have found people to post since they are my favourite subjects.

Thanks to all of your for your support, comments and the fun we have together.
