Old House of Commons, shortly before it was burned
In 1834 the Old Palace of Westminster (which housed both the Houses of Parliament since 1512) was accidentally burned down.
This enormous painting, somewhat surprisingly to be found in the National Portrait Gallery, London, shows the debate in the House of Commons about the Great Reform Act of 1832.
The passing of the Act brought many radical changes to Britain and its government. The start of modernity, and a fascinating period!
