Flooded Waimak
There has been a lot of rain in the headwaters of the Canterbury rivers. My son and I went to the Waimakariri Gorge Bridge to have a look. I have never seen the Waimak so flooded. This shot was taken looking north across the river. The current is from left to right. It's about 80 metres to the far bank. The turbulence was spectacular. Waves like the one shown were more than a metre higher than the average surface level. Normally at this angle you would see only a narrow strand of water on the other side, mostly obscured by the the plants in front.
A short movie I made of the flood.
