Day 2
Not a brilliant day at the festival but it had some good bits! I'd had a headache the previous day which I'd managed to subdue with painkillers. Today despite taking co-codamol before leaving, the headache was assuming painful proportions by the time I'd driven there. I decided to head for my tent that I'd put up the previous day and sleep it off!
I woke up in time for the Spoon Wood carving workshop I'd signed Vegan Jo and myself up for! Well I couldn't stop laughing for the first 5 minutes! The course was 3 hours long and I couldn't imagine it would take that long to carve a spoon, thinking in terms of a teaspoon. Well it was a full size wooden spoon! To say it was hard work would be understating it! Everyone sustained cuts from the knives we were using! The guy said he didn't understand why they had set up chairs under the tree we were doing the workshop - it was better to be on the floor using a cut log to hold the spoon against - as you can see demonstrated by The Three Amigos! I watched the guy as he demonstrated the techniques and he was using his whole upper body to provide power to the knife! I was wearing trousers so rested the spoon on the wooden chair between my legs! I still sustained many cuts! Plasters were being handed out left, right and centre and one girl had to go to First Aid to be bandaged up! There was a determined spirit amongst us though and we persevered with lots of jokes! The guy next to Vegan Jo said his wife had signed him up to the course - I asked what she was getting up to whilst he was occupied for the three hours! I loved these 2 stylish women in the group - if you look at the spoon the lady in orange is holding you will see it is covered in her blood! By 2 hours the effort and jarring of the knife on the wood saw the headache return and I told Jo I needed food and more tablets! Once she had finished carving out the bowl of her spoon with a curved knife we set off to find food! Another hour would have seen the spoons completed but I was happy with the shallow bowl I had managed to carve out and decided to apply the Wabi-Sabi approach to it!
The Reader and her husband The Subletter ( who was working as a steward for the festival) joined us by the river and then we set off to hear Russell Brand do the end of the day storytelling in the childrens section in the woods. It was packed with adults and children as you can imagine! He has a lovely voice and read Oscar Wildes The Selfish Giant which I had never heard! After this we went to The Black Cow saloon by the viaduct for a drink - water and aspirin for me!
We headed back to the house to meet up with French Dweller and Party Girl who had sneaked in without paying! However by this time the headache was again getting bad so off I went to my tent again! Thank heavens I had thought to give myself this bolt hole! Unfortunatly the young group of people camped next to me had overindulged already and the lads spent most of the time throwing up next to my tent! I put my earphones on and tried to meditate myself somewhere else! At 10 The Reader joined me and we headed home - Vegan Jo stayed on to party!
Just a few photos here from the day!
