The Bells

Long Reach hospital was built in 1901 to deal with a smallpox epidemic. It was supposed to be temporary but remained until 1975.This bell was rung by those seeking entrance! Patients were transported to the hospital down the river Thames and then loaded onto horse-drawn trams for the journey into the hospital.

There were many small hospitals in Dartford set up by the metropolitan asylum board which were eventually replaced by the current large establishment. I have visited this so often lately that I feel like a member of staff! Today's was for a checkup on Mrs WW wound which is healing again nicely.
