Caig Falls
This is Caig Falls, soon to be subject to hydro electric intervention. However the spot is given sufficiently high regard for its beauty that planning conditions ensure that water "borrowed" from the river further up the mountain must be returned to the same water course above the falls so that the spectacle is never depleted artificially. It is literally a picture post card spot with remarkably easy access and has recently become a popular spot for wedding ceremonies.
The falls sit at the west end of a narrow shady valley known locally as "The Dark Mile" (Mile Dorcha on the OS map).
It is a still, mild and very wet day here in Lochaber and we took a wee run out here anticipating there may be a big flow over the falls. The river here is very "flashy" in that it responds very directly to the prevailing weather.
As you approach the adjacent bridge on foot you are aware of walking in to a sudden mini rain storm. The mass of water charging over the rocks generates a considerable draught and blows spray everywhere. There is a bit of personal hassle and discomfort to getting this photo. Despite moving swiftly and keeping the camera protected to the last moment the spray engulfs everything in seconds and of course by the time the shot is taken the photographer is drenched too.
Anyway, its a wee bit different and I quite fancy trying a shot of something in The Dark Mile next time I'm out that way.
