Collieries

Another mid-week friendly and continuing my tour of the Yorkshire coalfield, Pontefract Collieries of the Northern Premier League were hosting last season’s Sheffield and Hallamshire County Senior League Champions, North Gawber Colliery.

Given the difference in the standing of the clubs it was no surprise that Pontefract ran out 4-0 winners, despite filling the team with youngsters in the second half.

The ground is currently undergoing significant refurbishment, catching up with Pontefract’s rather rapid rise through the leagues in recent seasons. I will come back for a competitive Saturday fixture at some point to see the result of that work and to get a better feel for a typical match day here.
