Alpine Salamander

At first glance this might not seem a great picture, but this amazing little fellow* was a foot deep in the most crystal clear water.
They're a very special creature about which not a lot is known. They are thought to be very locally stationary, some that have been monitored didn't move more than 12m in a year. They live for at least ten years, but as they hibernate from October to April, usually well above the snowline in the mountains, they are difficult to study.
The females also have an exceptional pregnancy period - above 2000m they can remain pregnant for three years, below a pregnancy still lasts two.

*usual rules apply, I've no idea how to tell the boys from the girls. In this species they are the same size and colour.
