St Albans

As part of our mission to visit all English cathedrals we headed off to St. Albans today. What a gem. The oldest site of continuous Christian worship in Britain there has been a church built over his tomb since St Alban was martyred in c. 300 and a monastery since 793 founded by the Saxon king Offa. The cathedral features wall paintings from the 1200s, the longest nave in Britain at 85 m ( some parts using Roman bricks from the town of Verulamium ) and of course the shrine of St Alban. Very impressive and well worth a visit.
