Not France
Well, in fact this is France but the French are regarded by the locals as being almost as foreign as me. This is northern Catalonia as far as they are concerned and although there is no separatist movement and Catalan is not much spoken, their cultural identity is very much Catalan. Recent regional reorganisation put Languedoc Roussillon within the new region of Occitanie with two administrative centres miles away in Toulouse and Montpellier. Occitan is not spoken here so the new name has caused affront. Soon after the event, every local village added the words 'Pays Catalan' to its village sign so no-one could be in doubt of where allegiance should lie.
