Carol: Rosie & Mr. Fun

2019 Tuesday — Big Sur Field Trip

Today we left the house before 8:30 a.m. and returned in the dark after 9 p.m. Our destination was all of the Big Sur Coast. The highlight was ALL OF IT! The best of the best was a surprise and new to us: Hawthorne Gallery. It is directly across Hwy.1 from Nepenthe.

We stopped there because they have a secluded, large parking lot (sort of hidden behind a rustic wooden fence). Mr. Fun & I needed to get the 3 pups out of the car for some food & water. We felt like we were trespassing, but we weren’t.

The gallery gardens surrounding the parking lot are beautifully decorated with sculptures in and amongst the majestic trees. I fed the pups while Mr. Fun went inside to see the art. Once the pups were back in the car, he urged me to go inside with him to see the wonder inside the glass walls of the gallery.

The outside landscape and the seascape would have been enough, and the building by itself is a work of art, but once inside the gallery I was again overwhelmed with beauty. The artistic creativity collected in the Hawthorne is stunning. It contains a variety of various types of art, and the gallery’s website has superb photographs and exquisitely written articles, which are much more convincing than my cellphone photos and quickly stitched together words. If you travel the Big Sur Coast be sure to stop at the Hawthorne Gallery.

There are dozens of other places to stop and to see — the turn off at Mill Creek and a little further south at Willow Creek, both have a road down to the shore and bathrooms. Then Coast Gallery, Nepenthe, Lucia Lodge, the monastery (yes take the road to the top), Tree Bones Resort, Gorda, and Ragged Point will provide you with lots of trail marker memories.
