Keeping Me Sane

General Store & Post Office

This building was built in 1884 and the post office that was established in 1882 was moved into the General Store. It's in the small town of Evinston, FL just South of Gainesville.

It's a unique store and Post office in that it still stocks some of the products sold back in the late 1880's and early 1900's. It also houses the original post office boxes from that era as well.

They sell local farm grown vegetables and fruit as well as canned jams and jellies. I could go into the store again and spend hours looking at everything. To be there in the early morning when all the old timers sit around, play checkers and talk about memories of the past would be an exceptional treat. It's a part of old Florida (before tourism) that is disappearing rapidly. It's sad that we don't preserve the buildings and places of history as a learning tool for generations to come. Young people don't care about such treasures anymore.

Go large to view all the history on the walls and shelves. View all of today's photos, including an Eagle, hawk, killdeer, and tri-colored heron HERE.
