Triana, Triana que bonita esta Triana

Across the river Guadalquivir in Sevilla lies the barrio of Triana in Sevilla. Until the 1950s it was the beating heart of gitano (gypsy) culture and music in Andalusia. But in the days of Franco the hungry gaze of developers and property speculators were turned on this attractive riverside area of narrow streets and fine old houses. The gitanos were expelled to out of town soulless housing projects where their bonds of social solidarity and community were ripped asunder. Now the area is gentrified with the final offence: a cultural centre that celebrates a gypsy past but makes no mention of their bitter expulsion. The gitanos of Andalusia still yearn for Triana.
