"We are not a 'chalta hai' generation".

This blip captures a protest in India following the rape and murder of a 23 year old Delhi student. Given the number and scale of protests across India over the last 3 weeks, Jason Burke argues that India is witnessing 'the existence of large numbers of young, educated, urban potential voters who will no longer tolerate a largely unaccountable, unresponsive political elite and bureaucracy incapable of performing the most fundamental tasks' (The Guardian, 3 Jan 2013).

It is heartening to see young men and women at the forefront of these protests.

This could be the start of some serious change in male attitudes and behaviour towards women.

'Chalta hai' is Hindi for 'This is okay' suggesting the status quo can prevail. This new awakening/movement is no longer prepared to tolerate the status quo. And quite right too!
