As the tide was coming in, I am not sure how long this coveted position on the beach, reserved so early in the morning, would have remained tenable.

But you do have to get in first thing if you want a decent spot on the beach. Soon after this was taken, the crowds descended and it was cheek by jowl for the rest of the day.

So we went off to La Cañada, to the huge shopping mall there. It was cool and air-conditioned and not too busy and quite a good place to be on such a hot day. 36º was a conservative estimate. The car thermometer was still registering 30+ as we were heading home at 10 o'clock.
