St Anna church
The Parish Church of St. Mother Anna (also called St. Mother Annakerk, St. Annakerk or St. Anne's Church) is a Roman Catholic church in the Bekkerveld neighborhood in the Aarveld-Bekkerveld district of Heerlen. The church was built in 1953 to a design by Frits Peutz and Hendrik Teeken (1900-1950) and commissioned by then-mayor Marcel van Grunsven.
The Sint-Anna church was declared a national monument on October 15, 2007. The church is on a list of 101 national monuments from the reconstruction period between 1940 and 1958. It is, therefore, one of the many national monuments based on a design by Peutz in Heerlen. The church is especially special because the construction is based on a completely concrete skeleton.
I have always found the church impressive because it always made me look like a cathedral. The situation on a large lawn not immediately surrounded by houses and other buildings reinforced this impression. Perhaps also because the church was built in the year that I was born. Who knows? Sentiment? Although I have nothing to do with the belief that it is being proclaimed.
