3 souvenirs

According to family legend my mother's father returned from WW1 with three souvenirs.
The first was his Christmas gift box. I've no idea what happened to the contents.
The second was this little clock. Apparently somewhere in northern France his regiment took over a deserted chateau for the night. My grandfather and a friend entered an upstairs room and found a safe in it. As the story goes, after they managed to break the safe open they found it was empty apart from a rosewood box which contained this clock. My grandfather kept the clock and his friend kept the box. I'm not entirely convinced of this story as he was a very much a man of god but maybe war loot was seen as different from stealing. After all his bible would also have said 'thou shalt not kill'. What is certain is that he returned from France with it so I think I owe this clock to some French family. It is a gorgeous little clock and it still works.
The third item was the little spoon which was always in his breast pocket. It was in his breast pocket when the bullet hit it. If it weren't for that little spoon I wouldn't be here.

PS. Just posted this extra for MrsW. She is rightfully proud of this courgette. It may not be the biggest, which obviously is not the point with courgettes, but it is definitely the nearest to perfect.
