Caen locks
Mr U&L and I had to collect something today, so we decided to meet at Caen locks in Devizes (Wiltshire) as it is a really great photogenic place!
Caen hill locks (pronunced Cane) are a flight of 29 locks on the Kennet and Avon Canal between Rowde and Devizes in Wiltshire. The 29 locks have a rise of 237 feet in 2 miles (1 in 44 gradient). Sixteen of the locks form a steep flight in a straight line up the hillside and are designated a scheduled monument. The pounds between these locks are very short and as a result 15 of them have a large sideways extended pond used to store the water needed to operate them.
Well worth a visit!
