Sweetheart Abbey
We ended up here by default because the first choice for lunch was full! So we lunched at the Abbey Tea rooms.
Unfortunately there is a lot of scaffolding in parts of the Abbey so most of it is closed to the public.
The abbey was founded by Dervorguilla of Galloway in memory of her husband, John de Balliol.
After his death, she kept his embalmed heart, contained in a casket of ivory and silver, with her for the rest of her life, and it was buried alongside her when she died, she named the abbey Dulce Cor (Latin for Sweet Heart).
