Galaxy
Not a photograph strictly speaking, but an image stack of 60 exposures, 30 seconds each. This gives the effect of a single 30 minute exposure but reduces tracking errors, light pollution and so on.
The images were taken with a 300mm lens on a DSLR mounted on a tracking device to follow the stars.
The galaxy is known variously as the Andromeda Galaxy, M31 and NGC224. It is visible to the unaided eye at a suitably dark location. This is impressive given that it is around 2.5 million light years away; meaning that as you look at this image you are effectively time-travelling into the deep past!
