Alice had about 10 yrs of "not the best" of health. This MAY be a feeble excuse - BUT - I can't remember if I've been that side of the pond, "productively" for that long. 
I managed to get the Primula (Suspect florindae) successfully AND remove the rest of the weeds and leave "Old faithful" in situ.
At this rate of progress I can foresee several weeks of toil THEN there's the border to consider.
