Life in a Northern Town

Paddling

Today we went paddling in the Greenland Sea about 40 miles from the Arctic Circle. It was a tad nippy! We laughed until we cried.

We’ve also been to Húsavík which seemed like a metropolis after a week of isolation - we even had heavenly fish and chips. On the first day here I managed to lose my compact camera and the insurance company can’t get their heads around Iceland. Although the only place for lost property here is Tourist Information the insurance company are insisting on a police report - the nearest police station is an hour away in Húsavík so we called there today. The police officer was typically Icelandic dour and didn’t know what on earth to do with us - he just shook his head in disbelief that I needed a report number. So I have come away with his email address and I shall just have to hope that’s enough! I suspect if there such a thing as crime numbers here it would be 2019/3.

We called at a little folk museum in turf houses - see extra. It was hilarious. Virtually nothing was Icelandic and the prime exhibit seemed to be his fully functioning toilet, which he invited us to use! Other highlights were a chair from IKEA, some semi pornographic matchbox labels and a collection of postcards from Jersey, He did however direct us to a beach with some fossils that geologists from all over the world come to. I am sure it was amazing but the drive down a 1 in 4 narrow dirt track with a sheer drop to the side was the most exciting bit for me!

We head back towards Reykjavik tomorrow - we are knackered but there’s a chance of Auroras tonight so fingers crossed.....
