The Battery, Longues sur Mer

We woke to rain today. Not heavy, but when in a tent it always sounds heavy. Our plan was to get up and go straight in to Bayeux for breakfast and the market. We got in about 8.45 but the market were still putting up their stalls. So we found a nice little cafe and had croissant, pain au chocolat and pain au raisin and tea. Black tea. Which turned out to be darjeeling! It was really nice, and had stopped raining. On and off through the morning, it rained, but was still warm. We had a nice coffee stop, and did lots of shopping, having worked out our remaining money and allocating the necessary 25 euros for the tolls going home.

We were back at the campsite by midday, where we had a leisurely lunch. Henry still needed to spend his money, so we we went back out to Port en Bessin for a wander, but no luck. Then drove on to Arromanches, nowhere being that far from our base. On our way back we stopped at Le Batterie. This was where the Germans had a prime gun position, within 4 of these large gun batteries. 3 are very well preserved, but the first was clearly damaged - I assume bombed. It is the only German battery that still has its guns. We were able to go in behind the guns. It is all left as it was. They look straight out over the D Day beaches.

Back at the tent now. Hoping to get chicken and frites for dinner....although we did order it this morning, the campsite manager had forgotten when we went at 7pm to collect it. He was profusely apologetic and said he can do it for 8pm. So we are having a cup of tea and relaxing a bit more! Still dodging the rain showers.

Our last day tomorrow and we don't plan any chasing around, as Jon has a long drive on friday. The french half shouldn't be too bad, but once we are over the channel, who knows!
