Drawn...
...To The valley.
It is the week long open studios of artists in the Tamar valley. Vegan Jo and I spent the day visiting as many as we could!
Our first stop was in Callington and this studio and house that I never knew was hidden away down the road next to my hairdresser! It had a wonderful aged gate and it was like entering another world. Callington is not an attractive town and this house I think has been here longer than most of what is around it. It was like entering a magical garden living in another time!
There were 3 artists exhibiting and upstairs was the studio with a range of work by the people who use the studio. I loved this natural piece of art made by ivy growing over one of the windows that was made of lines. I was most taken by the extra - prints on acetate of Cornish trees. The Brexit drawing in extra I found also very succinct in it's message. Whilst there I bumped into an ex-allotmentor who had done the flower arrangements. Her husband suffers from depression and she told me he is having another dip and also she lost her father earlier in the year. She looked close to tears. There seems little good news for those I know.
Our next stop was Tavistock and a bite to eat! Then off to Masako's exhibit. As usual a visual delight but I suddenly noticed a jagged moving c shaped light in my right eye. I knew it was just going to get bigger but didn't know if a migraine was going to follow. We left and I sat in the churchyard whilst Vegan Jo went to buy some Migraleve tablets! By the time she returned the c had got huge and was obscuring my vision in both eyes! But no headache so we gently pootled on. Found a lovely mixed artist location and this sewing machine made by what the artist called "Assemblage!"
We made our way back to Calstock with two more stops. The first was a mother and two daughters who were so friendly and each gave us a guided talk of their work. The mother did paintings on material and then sew on them, one daughter did ceramics, the other jewellery. She was so interesting and makes the pieces from old silver ware, cutlery, particularly spoons! Her worktable was compact and and she took us through the whole process. The daughters looked like teenagers to me and Jo, but one was married with children and the other was taking up her first teaching post, an art teacher of course! It made us both feel very old! The next stop more artists showing together but nothing too inspiring! We had intended to finish with the various artists in Calstock but by this time Vegan Jo was feeling sick and headachy! It was a very still day and I blame the air pressure for our delicate heads! We decided to call it a day!
I may go back for the photographic print if I don't see anything else the catches my eye when I do some more studios later in the week!
