John Roebling's Bridge
John Roebling completed this bridge across the Ohio River on January 1, 1867. At the time of completion, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world (1030').
During the civil war, Gen Lew Wallace's Union forces crossed the Ohio river on a pontoon bridge at this point. The September 1862 event defended Cincinnati against confederate attack. Later, Lew Wallace became a territorial governor of New Mexico and wrote "Ben Hur."
Later in 1867, Roebling started a similar bridge connecting Brooklyn to Manhattan: you may recognize the style. He died before completing the Brooklyn Bridge.
Again, I stood on the Kentucky side of the Ohio, at the base of the bridge to shoot my photos. This morning, the temperature was about 10F warmer than yesterday. However, my fingers were still very cold when I decided to pack it in after completing this photo. Note to self: "bring the gloves next time."
I drove back to the motel in Ohio using this 146 year old bridge.
