Life in a Northern Town

Lava day

We went to the lava fields at Gjastykki - relatively new lava from the Krafla eruptions of the early 80s.

My sister in law was in heaven! On the way we saw every type of lava imaginable, more-geothermal pools, steam pouring from holes in the ground, basalt columns and an enormous magma chamber that just loomed out of nowhere. The lava fields themselves are hard to access so it was a privilege to walk them. I didn't expect to see so much colour - it was like finding treasure at every step.

In extras you can see some of the sights we saw along the way.

I'm nearly caught up now.
