Start of the National Road

This marks the beginning of the National Road, the first major highway by the federal government. Construction began in Cumberland in 1811 and continued through 1837. It ends in Vandalia, Illinois. The road was 620 miles long (1,000 km) and connected the Potomac and Ohio rivers. Much of the road is still in use, though it's been modernized.
