Deansgate

Went into Manchester today. Extinction Rebellion have been there for the past few days and the roads around Deansgate were closed off. Good for them! It was good to be able to breathe relatively clean air and to cross the roads without dodging the traffic.

Before coming across Extinction Rebellion, I had been to the courts to lend some moral support to people who were fighting the terms of an injunction order against ‘persons unknown’. Three protesters were due to be supported by Friends of the Earth, but a high court judge refused to grant costs protection, so they were effectively priced out. The case continues tomorrow without Friends of the Earth – officially. I can’t say that I hold out much hope of the injunction being changed. The challenge is being heard by the same judge who granted the Draconian injunction to Cuadrilla (Fracking company) in the first place.

I also went to Cheetham Hill to visit the Irish World Heritage Centre. An Irish Language evening class is starting on the 4th September, and I am trying to work out whether I can get there and back easily enough on public transport. It’s not looking good. I don’t fancy catching 2 trains and a tram on each leg of the journey, especially at night.
