The Old Forge (Wednesday 4th September 2019)

Most of Gardening Wednesday with Refna this week was taken up with her potting up a lot of plug plants of clematis, penstemons and phlox for next year, but as my neighbours at Turnpike Cottage had replaced the fence to their garden at the top of the drive, she also re-attached the wisteria to our side of the fence in the community driveway patch, and while we were up there I did some weeding and she planted in some lupins that had been in pots. I also busied myself with a few other odd jobs around the garden and undertook refreshment duties.

The Beatles - How Do You Do It? (recorded 4 September 1962, EMI Studios, Abbey Rd)
4 September 1962 is an important date in Beatle history as it was the day the Beatles recorded their first single, Love Me Do, with Ringo on drums. George Martin wanted them to record a song that Mitch Murray had written, and had previously sent them a demo of How Do You Do It?  that was intended for Adam Faith, with Barry Mason singing, backed by the Dave Clark Five. The Beatles had accordingly adapted it to their own style in rehearsal but weren't keen on releasing the song as they wanted to establish themselves as songwriters.
The previous day they had played a lunchtime gig at the Cavern in Liverpool and a gig at the Queen's Hall in Widnes before flying down (from what would later be John Lennon Airport) to a hotel in Chelsea, arriving at Abbey Road for that afternoon and evening's session.
There they played the song grudgingly and possibly not as well as they might have, but at the session they also played Love Me Do and Please Please Me, and managed to convince George Martin to let them release Love Me Do as their debut single instead.
They re-recorded it a week later with a session drummer, to Ringo's eternal displeasure, but the version on the first pressing of the single, due to an error, was the one from 4 September. The Beatles acetate of  How Do You Do It? was passed on by Brian Epstein to Gerry and the Pacemakers, who had a major hit with it, while the Beatles' own version was officially unheard until Anthology 1 in 1995.
